Marine Battery Maintenance and Safety 101

    Last updated 2 months ago

No boater wants to be caught out on the water with a dead battery. That’s why keeping a battery in good working order is especially important for boat owners. Here’s a quick guide to help you skillfully—and safely—keep your boat battery operating at a high level for years to come.

    Keep Your Battery Clean
Over time, acid film and dirt can accumulate on your battery terminals and case. This can lead to a small transfer of power between terminals, draining your battery prematurely. You can wash the exterior of your battery with diluted ammonia or a paste of baking soda and water. Be sure to flush the solution off with plenty of clean water.  You should also clean your battery terminals at least once every season. To do this, disconnect your battery and clean the terminal and cable clamps with a wire brush until you remove all signs of corrosion and grease.

    Check Electrolyte Levels
Maintaining proper electrolyte levels is crucial to the performance of your battery. In most boat batteries, you can check electrolyte levels by removing the cell caps and observing the level inside the cells. Check to see that the level reaches high enough to make contact with the split vent. If it doesn’t, add distilled water until the liquid reaches its proper level. Throughout this process, take special care to avoid getting acid on your hands, face, or clothing.

    Store Your Battery Properly
Marine batteries are unique in that they typically go through months of inactivity. To prevent damage to your battery, you’ll need to perform a bit of preparation before putting your boat into storage. Disconnect your battery completely from your boat and clean its exterior and terminals. Be sure to store your battery in a well-ventilated, cool, and dry space.
